While not going overboard, it would have been nice to hear this music without the caramel-thick arrangements, leaving just Getz and a rhythm section to play sans the unnecessary sugarcoating

Stan Getz gets the word he is cancer free and records this wonderful set of joyful music. That great Gets upper register tenor tone with jazz/pop arraingments. Recorded over three days in September of 1989, Apasionado is structured on the ideas and formula Getz used for his 1961 Verve Focus album. And while the improvisation of Focus has been replaced with a sort of stream of consciousness, the work slowly simmers, belaying a depth, presence, and attitude that stands on its own, making Apasionado a masterful production of restrained wanderlust.

Tenor saxophonist Stan Getz was its most commercially successful and musically substantial American practitioner. Along with the Gilbertos, drummer Milton Banana is key to the success of Getz/Gilberto. Jobim, who wrote six of the album's eight songs and played piano, brought Banana over from Brazil specially for the sessions and his gently propulsive playing is a delight throughout.
