Opiate is an EP by American rock band Tool. It was produced and engineered by Sylvia Massy and former Minor Threat bassist Steve Hansgen. Released in 1992, it was the result of some two years of the band playing together after their formation in 1990. Opiate preceded Tool's first full-length release, Undertow, by a year. It is named after a quote by Karl Marx: "religion. is the opiate of the masses".

Opiate is Tool's debut EP that combines a few short studio and live songs exclusive to this mini album. Here, the band are just starting to develop their noise. The album contains some bone crunching songs such as "Part of Me" and "Hush". These two being the highlights of the record. The live tracks are strong but this album lacks any real attention to detail or hints to the progressive sound that Tool would later develop.

According to Tool drummer Danny Carey in Revolver Magazine Presents Tool, "A lot of the songs for Undertow were already written when we did Opiate, but we felt like no one would take us seriously unless we recorded only our most aggressive, in-your-face song and put them out there at one time. And I think that got us typecast as a metal band.
