Phantasmagoria is the sixth album by the Damned, released by MCA in July 1985. After much wrangling, the Damned received a new contract with MCA Records in October 1984 on the strength of the song "Grimly Fiendish", issued as a single the following March. They recorded the album in Eel Pie Studios between March and June 1985.
The Damned - Phantasmagoria (Full Album) 1985.
Released in July 1985, Phantasmagoria was Vanian’s album through and through. The majority of the music had been written by Roman Jugg, but it is the frontman who dominates. Ushered in by some overwrought saxophone courtesy of esteemed session player Gary Barnacle, the opening Street Of Dreams was a sustained rush of vampyric bombast, with Vanian moodily intoning about beauties, beasts and the dead beats and the dispossessed. The greatest moment on Phantasmagoria, and the most pointedly gothic piece of music the band have ever recorded, came at the end of the album’s first side. Six-and-a-half minutes of nightmarish grandeur, Sanctum Sanctorum was a wildly indulgent sprawl of ghostly pipe organ, concert hall piano and thunderstorm sound effects that brought Vanian’s grimly poetic tale of doomed love vividly to life.

I'm listening to it right now for the first time in years, and it still holds up in my opinion. It's quite the pop album! Reply Notify me Helpful.

There'll Come a Day", however is a bad song, one which I most typically skip while listening to this
30th Anniversary of The Damned’s Phantasmagoria. However-filling the void came the band’s most Gothic period (that finally matched the guise of their vampiric front-man) with the release of their sixth studio album Phantasmagoria-one of the band’s most popular albums to this day. The album’s signature romantic sound is channeled the creepy and almost Scream Lord Sutch like track Grimly Fiendish
The first fruit of this new Damned, Phantasmagoria, doesn't match up to the excellent variety and performance level on Strawberries, but still has a lot to show while at the same time exploring new territory for the group. The cover and artwork seem to ally the Damned even more closely with goth rock than before, but Vanian thankfully has never seen fit to simply ape those clichés, steering his own powerful path.
