The album was darker than Rihanna’s other albums and besides Pop, provided some R&B and Hip Hop. The album has six singles; Russian Roulette, Hard, Wait Your Turn. Rude Boy, Rockstar 101, and Te Amo. The tour to promote the album Last Girl on Earth Tour from April 16, 2010 to March 12, 2011.
Russian Roulette," released weeks prior to Rated R, just hinted at Rihanna's sudden desire to provoke. Even with the realization that it is metaphorical, the song startles with its hesitant gasps, spinning cylinders, and verses that are glacially paced, where a cold piano line and the slight inflections in Rihanna's voice are front and center. And then there’s an audible shudder followed by a discharged bullet - the abrupt end to one of Rated R’s most restrained moments.

Talking about Rated R in a promo interview, Rihanna said, "Anybody can make a hit, but I wanted a real album. Such is the flawed logic of a newly legal drinker who has known only skyrocketing commercial success. While the singer is trying to accentuate her individuality and independence with this album, the "dark" and/or "mature" LP is nothing new- from Janet Jackson's The Velvet Rope to Christina Aguilera's Stripped to Kelly Clarkson's My December, the rebel record is now a de rigeur coming-of-age maneuver.
Rihanna’s fourth album explores late-’00s pop’s darker corners while allowing the Barbados-born phenomenon to flaunt her musical growth. The Jeezy-assisted stomper Hard and the dancehall-tinged come-on Rude Boy evoke a packed club’s last-call clamor; Rockstar 101 and Fire Bomb show how Rihanna’s commanding attitude and larger-than-life persona are well-matched with electric-guitar pyrotechnics. Ballads like the stark Russian Roulette and the wistful The Last Song display her maturation as a singer, their restrained arrangements making ample room for her subtle emoting.
In support of the album, Rihanna began the Good Girl Gone Bad Tour in September 2007, with 80 shows across the US, Canada and Europe . Recorded after the assault by her then-boyfriend, Chris Brown, Rated R (2009) had a much darker tone and was filled with various emotions she experienced throughout 2009.
