Caravan is the debut album by the British Canterbury scene progressive rock band Caravan. It was released in October 1968. The album was the result of the band borrowing equipment from Soft Machine (who were touring the . at the time with Jimi Hendrix and using his backline), producing "an unusually mature musical statement". The album was released in stereo and mono, in both the United States and United Kingdom, but failed to reach chart hit status.

Caravan are an English band from the Canterbury area, founded by former Wilde Flowers members David Sinclair, Richard Sinclair, Pye Hastings and Richard Coughlan in 1968. The band have never achieved the great commercial success that was widely predicted for them at the beginning of their career, but are nevertheless considered a key part of the Canterbury scene, blending psychedelic rock, jazz and classical influences to create a distinctive progressive rock sound.

В честь 40-летия альбома CARAVAN "In The Land Of Grey And Pink", It Doesn’t Take A Lot и Nigel Blows A Tune, а также четыре неальбомных трека, сведение которых также выполнил Wilson. A very solid reissue by MOV.As usual their great vinyl, which I believe is made at Record Industries, is near dead quiet here. The sound too is very pleasant with no sibilance or similar distortion that can sometimes be overlooked. There is however a lack of low end as I feel it, preventing the soundstage to become fully realized drum, bass and perhaps even vocal wise. It hinders instrument separation as well as my oh so desired shaking of the listening seat. There is too perhaps a lack in kick and drive that likely stems from insufficient dynamics and presence in some instrument. Ive not heard other releases so perhaps its a futile want on some tracks to bring out more, especially drum wise. They just dont seem to reach their potential a lot of the time.Still, this is a very listenable and recommended reissue that for the price probably satiates most peoples needs.Equipment Used:Rega RP1 with Nagaoka MP-200 CartridgeCyrus 2 AmplifierSystem Fidelity SF-3050 Tower SpeakersCustom made HQ Speaker Cables

A masterpiece!!!!!Very definitely recommended for lovers of quality uk psych

Quite a noisy pressing unfortunately. Mine was sealed, and has a suspicious amount of surface noise.

My copy is nice and quiet so I don't believe it's the pressing. I bought a Gong album a few years ago sealed and that too was noisy. I think that over the 35+ years, poor storage conditions (Temp/Humidity etc or long term flat storage) had contributed to the noisy condition of the record by damaging the grooves as it looked pristine. Perhaps something similar happened to your copy of the Caravan album?

This repress sounds great! Very quiet and detailed. The hand drum fills on Ride are standouts..the flute solo on Love Song is perfectly clear..the whole album is great!

i own the french press ref 2315 189 , but on middle sticker of the LP it miss the stamp of the SACEM and it's notified Fr. Melodie without date of edition.Does anybody kwow if it's original press or a copy ? (sticker in the middle is blue and brown as MGM record and not dark like on the picture)

Anyone notice a real drop in volume of the vocals on 'mr policeman' all the other tracks are fine? Really odd, almost like the vocal is almost faded out completely, my copy is in really good condition too.Not tried to clean it yet but the album is pretty spotless. . Any ideas?
Envias
Cheers for that! Must be a pressing fault. A bit irritating.

I own a German 1st press on Verve and it has the same volume drop.

The German release is somewhat a mystery. Obviously, only very few copies were pressed. The copy I own is a promo, stamped 'Unverkäufliche Warenprobe' on label. It was soon reissued on Polydor. The soundquality is fantastic, maybe better than the UK pressing (my copy is in mint condition, though).

I have this record (verve, vlp6011) with the incorrect cover. The vinyl is in v.good condition but has 'brendan' written on teh label. Does anybody know what it is worth without the correct sleeve?I know this issue is very rare

On the back mine says '(P) 1969' is that this version?

For me, I really believe Caravan pulled it off right from the start with this great album. Yeah, I know, their next two albums might be better, If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You and In the Land & Grey & Pink, but I found their debut quite enjoyable too. They were recording for Verve Forecast, but they didn't stay on the label for long, as apparently MGM got bought up in the States by Mike Curb who attempted to sanitize the label as much as Pat Boone tried to sanitize 1950s rock and roll (probably a good reason Frank Zappa left Verve by this time, and also the Velvet Underground - actually Zappa already left after his contract with MGM/Verve expired before Curb got his hands on the label). I understand Caravan tried for Island Records, but Chris Blackwell didn't like the vocals. On this debut, much of the vocals were from Pye Hastings, as Richard Sinclair only sung one entire song, and part of another. It sounds like unmistakable Caravan, songs like "A Place of My Own" and "Ride" proves that, with nice organ playing from David Sinclair. David Sinclair had yet to use that fuzz-organ, so you won't find that here, though. "Love Song With Flute" is a laid-back piece, with a flute solo from Pye Hastings' older brother Jimmy Hastings (who was no stranger in the Canterbury scene, as he appeared on many other Caravan albums, plus on Soft Machine's Third, and tons more). "Mr. Policeman" is the song with Richard Sinclair on vocals, and I understand he and Pye Hastings do a switch where Richard plays guitar and Pye on the bass. "Cecil Rons" is another great piece, while "Where But For Caravan Would I" is more into prog territory, with extended organ solos and changing passages and time signatures. Pye Hastings does the majority of singing on this piece, but Richard Sinclair also does some singing. While the sound quality isn't the best, I still think this album is great, and if you enjoyed their next two albums, you should get this one too.
