It was recorded at the Nippon Budokan Hall on April 26, 2004 in Tokyo, Japan. Due to time constraints, the songs "The Great Debate", "Under a Glass Moon" and "Caught in a Web", which included an extended drum solo, were removed from the setlist at the last minute.

However, "Live at Budokan" is easily a lesser live album, and fans really only need the more recent, higher quality "Score" to get a better idea of the band's talents. I can recommend this to anyone that does or doesn't have a Dream Theater album to see what the band is all about. Technical wizardry at work here is with no flaws. I can't imagine what the people in the audience were going through while watching this perfect performance.

Disc 1 finds the metallic progressive-rock quintet at its awe-inspiring best, plowing through its catalog of dramatic epics and jack-hammer instrumentals, including five of the seven songs from 2003's Train of Thought. Long instrumental breaks with the camera following the person playing the solo!

In 2004, Dream Theater released its live album Live at Budokan, and in either 2017 or 2018 the band will repeat the feat. While there's no release date attached to the album just yet, Dream Theater is currently plotting a new live album called Back To Budokan 2017. The album will feature an entire performance of Dream Theater's 1992 album Images & Words alongside some old and new songs, plus an entire performance of "A Change Of Seasons.
