Girls on Film" is the third single by Duran Duran, released on 13 July 1981. The single became Duran Duran's Top 10 breakthrough in the UK Singles Chart, peaking at Number 5 in July 1981. The band personally selected the song for release following the failure of its predecessor, "Careless Memories", which had been chosen by their record company, EMI. Its popularity provided a major boost to sales of the band's eponymous debut album, Duran Duran, which had been released a month earlier.

Girls on Film" was originally written by Andy Wickett, one of Duran Duran's previous singers before Simon Le Bon. The original demo of the song has a very peculiar sound that differs somewhat from the final album version recorded in 1981. However, Wickett's version of the chorus remained, with very little change having been made to that part of the song's composition. When Wickett left the band, Duran Duran bought the song from him for £600 and made him sign a waiver removing his rights to the song.

Girls On Film" is not the only hit released in 1981 with camera flashes in the first five seconds: "Freeze-Frame" by the J. Geils Band also incorporated shutter sounds. In a Songfacts interview with Kevin Godley, he talked about making the video: "The management, as well as the band at that period of time, were very into pushing the boundaries, and they could obviously sense that something was coming, that visuals were becoming more and more significant. After the network went on the air and started showing the "Girls On Film" video, Duran Duran's album enjoyed a measurable uptick in sales in markets where MTV was on cable systems. When Duran Duran released their next album, Rio, in 1982, MTV was ready for them, giving the first single, "Hungry Like The Wolf" lots of airtime. That song became their first American hit, rising to #3.

When BAD Burger announced last month that it was ditching its plan to stay open 24/7, it seemed like one more market indicator of the neighborhood’s shifting demographic from boho stronghold to, well, we’re not sure what it is anymore, other than upscale. Somehow, they were always packed and never too hard to find. AM/PM in Tribeca attracted a mix of Wall Street types, downtown rockers and artists, while Crisco Disco and the Anvil were for the gay boys on the West Side. The Jefferson was shabby chic, a derelict vaudeville theater and a bit of a death trap; there was only a narrow staircase to the second floor where the festivities sometimes spilled out onto a rickety marquee overlooking East 14th Street.
