The Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions is a 1985 compilation album, the first of what would be many career-spanning compilation albums of previously released material for Costello. All songs written by Elvis Costello except as indicated. Alison" (from My Aim Is True, 1977) – 3:22. Watching the Detectives" (from single, 1978) – 3:41. (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?" (Nick Lowe) (from single, 1979) – 3:31. Oliver's Army" (from Armed Forces, 1979) – 2:58.

Costello and the Attractions toured and recorded together for the better part of a decade, though differences between them caused a split by 1986. Costello's lyrics employ a wide vocabulary and frequent wordplay. While Blood and Chocolate failed to chart a hit single of any significance, it did produce what has since become one of Costello's signature concert songs, "I Want Yo. On this album, Costello adopted the alias Napoleon Dynamite, the name he later attributed to the character of the emcee that he played during the vaudeville-style tour to support Blood and Chocolate.

The best of EC & the Attractions might be titled the best of New Rock Since 1977. I've said it before to the chagrin of many pop enthusiasts, that Costello took over where Dylan left off. Here's alotta that "proof"! This dude is a fine vocal sylist and a finer composer. He did many of these songs but one must be impressed that such complicated music could be constantly reproduced "on the road", and apparently done note for note just lay back and remember something different: the guy with the Buddy Holly glasses and the Presley first name. Classic Elvis Costello, if you like him you will love this Album!!

Elvis Costello’s 3rd studio album (and his second with the Attractions) was released on 5 January 1979. The UK elephant cover (by Tom Pogson) was replaced with the paint splatter artwork in Canada and the US (Barney Bubbles provided the other album artwork), and both initial pressings included a 3-song live EP from the 4 June 1978 show at the Hollywood High School

He thought he was the King of America Where they pour Coca Cola just like vintage wine Now I try hard not to become hysterical But I'm not sure if I am laughing or crying. I wish that I could push a button And talk in the past and not the present tense And watch this hurtin' feeling disappear Like it was common sense. It was a fine idea at the time Now it's a brilliant mistake.
