Shades is the sixth album by J. J. Cale, released in 1981. After years of living and recording in Nashville, Cale relocated to California in 1980 and lived in an Anaheim trailer park but continued working with longtime producer Audie Ashworth. Shades, which continued Cale’s tradition of giving his albums one word titles, was recorded in various studios in Nashville and Los Angeles.

As Cale's influence on others expanded, he just continued to turn out the occasional album of bluesy, minor-key tunes. This one was even sparer than usual, with the artist handling bass as well as guitar on many tracks. Listened to today, it sounds so much like a Dire Straits album, it's scary. Mark Knopfler & Co. had appeared in 1978, seven years after Cale.

He is considered to be one of the originators of the Tulsa Sound, a loose genre drawing on blues, rockabilly, country, and jazz.
