March of the Zapotec & Realpeople: Holland. Together, this album-length double release represents the totality of Condon's work over the past year. March of the Zapotec is further testament toward the inventiveness and intimacy he creates as Beirut, a band which started as one person sounding like twelve, and has developed into a particular style and sound. No matter what inspirations jumpstart any one particular song, underlying it all is the realization that Condon is a singular artist creating an original sound.
MARCH OF THE ZAPOTEC/HOLLAND, released in 2009, brings together two EPs representing Condon’s restlessly inventive musical fusions. The songs on MARCH OF THE ZAPOTEC’s reflect Condon’s travels to Oaxaca, where he worked with a 19-piece Mexican band for a sound that merges Latin folk, Balkan brass band, and his own Western pop instincts. The songs on HOLLAND, which Condon recorded at his home studio, have a more electronic sound that may remind listeners of ‘80s synth pop or contemporary acts like the Postal Service
But March of the Zapotec is just one half of this intriguing and disparate 2xEP. The second is very different, and closer in sound to Condon's pre-Beirut bedroom recordings, when he went under the alias Realpeople
If you put the album on shuffle, the songs blend into a surprisingly coherent whole. Of course, if you did that, then you’ll miss the subtlety of March of the Zapotec’s pacing – a new, exciting development – which bodes well for the musicality (the overall impact, really) of future albums. Don’t dismiss March of the Zapotec, Holland as an in-between-albums triviality.
