The Symphonic Etudes (French: Études Symphoniques), Op. 13, is a set of études for solo piano by Robert Schumann. It began in 1834 as a theme and sixteen variations on a theme by Baron von Fricken, plus a further variation on an entirely different theme by Heinrich Marschner.
A CD that presents the composer in all the major phases of his artistry: Beginning with the composer's first Opus, the ABEGG variations, Schnyder plays also the and the famous Arabesque, and he ends his recital with the two very last works by Schumann, the "Songs of dawn" and the "Ghost" variations. Robert Schumann wrote his Arabeske in C major, Op. 18 in 1839 when he was 29 years old, dedicating it to Frau Majorin Friederike Serre auf Maxen, to whom he also dedicated his Blumenstück in D-flat, Op. 19. In the autumn of 1838 Schumann had left Leipzig for Vienna.

Robert Schumann, Etudes symphoniques (Symphonic Etudes), Op. 13, Variation 2.
This disc shows that Schumann, the quintessential romantic, has found a kindred spirit, but one whose approach is very much his own. Pletnev does not hesitate to bring out changes of mood, dynamics and character with quite drastic shifts of tempo, heralded by big ritardandos and long pauses. Thus, his playing is extraordinarily free, yet simple, lesiurely, comfortable and without fuss. Of the five rather unfamiliar "Album Leaves" (or Colored Leaves), four are slow and singing, one is a wispy witches' dance, and the Arabesque is all tenderness, ardor and charm. Disc: 1. 1. Symphonic Etudes ('Etudes in the form of variations') for piano (2 versions), Op. 13: Thema. 2. 13: Variation 2. Marcato il canto.
