A Break from the Norm is a compilation album arranged and released by British big beat musician Fatboy Slim, under his name of Norman Cook. It was released in 2001. The album was released to illustrate where Cook obtained a number of his samples for famous Fatboy Slim songs, and as such most of the artists (and tracks) are relatively obscure. To that end Break From The Norm (2001) is an unmitigated success as each of these disparate platters can be heard prior to their electronic rape and pillage. Admittedly, these cuts are getting a second chance to be heard by an entirely new generation of enthusiasts. Undoubtedly, many of whom have parents younger than a majority of the material featured on this disc. The tune stack resembles the proverbial ‘mixed' or ‘party' tapes (or CDs) that we have all made for primarily personal consumption.

Break from the Norm sound System Jan 2019. by Lloyd J (Break from the Norm}.

Society doesn’t like it when you break from the norm because it questions the norm. It’s easier to believe life is a series of steps to complain about: A-B-C. But if someone decides to do A-C-B and then succeeds, then people who lived A-B-C start to question their path and might feel a tinge of jealousy and regret that they were either too afraid or too ignorant to do A-C-B. For the first 50 years of Walter White’s life he was a passive observer mindlessly going through the motions of what he was supposed to do. It took a life threatening illness to make him snap out of it and fully embrace.

Only for the hardcore Norman Cook/Fatboy Slim fans. Most tracks have easily recognisable samples within them, although I struggled to work out where some of the later tracks were actually used. Overall a good mix of music: a fun jaunt through the Norman Cook world...although it does make you think where he gets some of his ideas from after hearing seemingly random and unremarkable songs.
