For all the popularity of many of Richard Strauss' tone poems, the two works contained on this CD - Sinfonia Domestica and Macbeth - aren't recorded all that often, and are possibly more-rarely performed in concert. Here, we have the best of both worlds, with the Sinfonia recorded "live" at the Vienna Musikvereinssaal in a truly fantastic 1983 performance by the Vienna Philharmonic under Lorin Maazel (who may be the only conductor out there to have recorded both of these pieces twice! - once for DG in Vienna, and later for BMG/RCA in Munich).
