Originally coupled with Maazel's DG "Also sprach Zarathustra," Macbeth is a studio recording set down in the Vienna Sofiensaal. The recordings have been sonically refurbished as part of DG's "Originals" series, which employs their Original Image Bit Processing (OIBP) techniques to get the most out of the original digital tapes. I'm a big Richard Strauss fan. His large orchestral tone poems use the orchestra in such a fantastic way - I've had the pleasure of playing them as a horn player over the years. Of all of them, I think I'd chose his Sinfonia Domestica, simply for its what-the-hell exuberance.

Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30 is a tone poem by Richard Strauss, composed in 1896 and inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical novel of the same name. The composer conducted its first performance on 27 November 1896 in Frankfurt. A typical performance lasts half an hour. The initial fanfare – titled "Sunrise" in the composer's program notes – became well-known after its use in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
