Michael Edward "Mike" Cotton (born 12 August 1939) is an English jazz and R&B trumpeter, flugelhornist, harmonicist, vocalist and bandleader born in Tottenham, North London. He is best known for leading his band under the names The Mike Cotton Jazzmen and The Mike Cotton Sound. Mike Cotton formed The Mike Cotton Jazzmen in the early 1950s during the "Trad jazz" boom.

The Mike Cotton Sound started life as an acclaimed trad-jazz band before evolving into a jazzy Mod/R&B combo in 1963. Issued in 1964, the band's eponymous debut album is now a legendary rarity, with copies changing hands for up to £600. This is the first time it has ever been reissued on CD! This long-overdue reissue also boasts some 15 bonus tracks, taken from all their singles A's and B's plus a rare live recording.

The Mike Cotton Sound also acted as a backing band, both live and in the studio, for artists such as Sugar Pie DeSanto, Gene Pitney, Stevie Wonder, Doris Troy, The Four Tops and Solomon Burke. They also backed Mary Hopkin in her classic Postcard LP for The Beatles' Apple Records. Their brass section, which included Mike Cotton himself on trumpet and flugelhorn, joined The Kinks on their 1971 Muswell Hillbillies album and stayed with them until the mid 1970s, when Cotton returned to the jazz scene.

The Mike Cotton Sound,despite some early trad jazz offerings,delivered some fine 45's from 65 to 68 on Columbia, Pye, Polydor and Mgm. Some featuring ex US serviceman "Lucas" on soulful vocals. A prime example of British blue eyed soul.
