The Gateway Singers were a folk music group who achieved national prominence in the US in the late 1950s. The group was included in the Smithsonian's "Folk Song America" compilation Gateway Singers member Lou Gottlieb left the band, obtained his PhD in musicology from the University of California and then formed The Limeliters Discography.

Bud & Travis began recording together in 1958; Edmonson was related to Colin Edmonson, whom Dashiell had met while serving in the Korean War. Travis Edmonson had previously been a member of the Gateway Singers Edmonson and Dashiell reportedly had frequent clashes, and the duo separated from 1960-63. During this period Dashiell put out several records with The Kinsmen, and Edmonson put out several solo albums

Like many groups formed during the popular commercial folk explosion of the late 50s, the Gateway Singers had a relatively short life. The line-up comprised Jerry Walter (vocals/banjo), Elmerlee Thomas (vocals), Lou Gottleib (b. 10 October 1923, Los Angeles, California, USA, d. 11 July 1996, Sebastopol, California, USA; bass) and Travis Edmondson (guitar). Following a path started by others, such as the Almanac Singers and the Weavers, they became one of the better-known US groups in the field at the time
