And, unlike many a folk compilation, this is open-minded enough to include material by some of the more commercially oriented folk acts that helped popularize the style on a mass level, like the Kingston Trio, the Rooftop Singers (with their number one single "Walk Right In"), the Limeliters, the Chad Mitchell Trio, and Randy Sparks. Indeed, virtually every major North American performer of the style is represented, even the hard-to-license Bob Dylan (though Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel, and James Taylor are not included due to licensing restrictions). 2. He Was a Friend of Mine.

The latest album by Washington-based songwriter and producer Phil Elverum centers on the sickness and death of his wife Geneviève Castrée. The album has an understandably ruminative, somber core. The passing of his wife made Elverum reflect on his own eventual mortality and the often unfairness of death. 12. The Innocence Mission: Sun On The Square The entrancingly beautiful folk-pop that Karen and Don Peris have been releasing for the past three decades under the name The Innocence Mission is a monument to a simpler way. The band’s 11th album, Sun on the Square, starts off lovely and never lets up. Along the way, we get an extended peek into Karen’s evocative wordsmithery, which is heavy with references to the natural world (light of winter, gentle lions, leaves on leaves, darting birds), streaked with color and shot through with an ever-present sense of wonder and exploration.

This album is a sampling of the music one might have heard in Washington Square Park on a Sunday afternoon in the early 1960s. From bluegrass, ballads, and blues to children's songs and Spanish guitar, this collection represents Greenwich Village's vibrant amateur music scene. 101. Shucking on the Corn. Washington Square" is a popular instrumental from 1963 by the New York City-based jazz group The Village Stompers. Named after the famous park in New York City, "Washington Square" became a hit single on 23 November 1963, when it peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, kept from the summit by Dale and Grace's hit song "I'm Leaving It Up to You" during the week that President Kennedy was assassinated.

The Folk Riot at Washington Square Park – sometimes referred to as the Beatnik Riot – occurred on Sunday, April 9th, 1961 after the Parks Department of that time suppressed performance at the park, musicians fought back, a protest ensued on that date. The police were heavy handed and mass arrests took place resulting in widespread media coverage and further mobilization of the community. Sunday was the big day for the folkies to meet up. In fact, the famous 17 minute film by Dan Drasin about the folk riot is simply named Sunday.
