This awkward if well-meaning collection chases Lou Reed through the four albums he made for Arista between 1976-1980, and does its level best to convince the listener that any moment now, there's some long-forgotten classic coming round the bend. Of course there isn't - of those four albums, only 1978's Street Hassle truly stands as vintage Reed and, if you already own the earlier Rock and Roll Diary anthology, with its vote-winning grasp of eight Velvet Underground classics, there's very little here to interest you further. If you must hear late-'70s Lou, go for the Take No Prisoners live album. It says more for both his mood and his mindset than any number of these so-called "classic performances.
