The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) was a jazz combo established in 1952 that played music influenced by classical, cool jazz, blues and bebop. For most of its history the Quartet consisted of John Lewis (piano), Milt Jackson (vibraphone), Percy Heath (double bass), and Connie Kay (drums). The group grew out of the rhythm section of Dizzy Gillespie's big band from 1946 to 1948, which consisted of Lewis and Jackson along with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Kenny Clarke.

5 Modern Jazz Quartet albums originally on Atlantic - 3 in their straight-ahead (for them, anyway) vein, and the other 2 working in their "third stream" (the attempt to blend jazz and classical music that had a brief run in this period). The other albums are filled with memorable music - disciplined, but swinging (with Milt Jackson, how could it not?). The "With Orchestra" album contains their best performance of "England's Carol" - leader John Lewis' reworking of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" - that track alone might justify the purchase! Parts of the third stream albums might not be to everyone's taste - you might find them dated experiments - but you'll appreciate their efforts in trying something new, and you'll never doubt their sincerity or craftsmanship.
