Carl Leukaufe, vibraphonist, Chicago modernist, veteran local warrior-hero inspired by Bags in occasional turns of phrases. This CD is his leader debut featuring two quartets anchored by drummer Robert Barty: one further documenting Lin Halliday’s tenor work; the other with trombonist Kevin Quail and pianist Jodie Christian.
Sleepy John’s first album was done by . Nunn (Audiophile Records). After my move to Chicago I usually used Hall Studios but when Stu Black (engineer) moved over to Chess, we did a lot of stuff there. 488-Eric Alexander & Lin Halliday – Stablemates. 491-Carl Leukaufe – Warrior. 509-Cecil Payne – Payne’s Window. 512-Francine Griffin – The Song Bird (The only jazz vocalist I ever wanted to record, and could).
