In August 2005, the San Francisco Girls Chorus represented the . at a world choral symposium in Kyoto, Japan. Those invited, approximately one from each continent, are among the best in the world. Suffice it to say, this was a high honor.
Founded in 1978, the San Francisco Girls Chorus has become a regional center for choral music education and performance for girls and young women ages 5-18. 400 singers from all nine Bay Area counties participate in this internationally recognized program, deemed a model in the country for training girls’ voices by the California Arts Council. The Girls Chorus is invited annually to perform with musical organizations including San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Symphony, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, and others. The Chorus has been honored to sing at many national and international venues, including the World Choral Symposium in Kyoto, Japan in 2005. SFGC’s discography continues to grow with a 2-disc set Heaven and Earth. The music represents some of the greatest sacred and secular repertoire ever written for treble voices.
Young Women's Choral Projects of San Francisco (YWCP).
Francisco Nunez (Artistic Director, YPC) and Susan McMane (Artistic Director, SFGC) led the combined choruses in a morning rehearsal with composer Gabriela Lena Frank in preparation for the world premiere of her piece, Two Mountain Songs. Both choruses also had the opportunity to rehearse their individual repertoire for the Alice Tully. Today meeting the girls from San Francisco was really fun and I found that our choirs have a lot in common. The joint rehearsal went well and I was very inspired by Gabriella Lena Frank.
