You Were on My Mind" is a popular song written by Sylvia Fricker in 1962, in a bathtub in a suite at the Hotel Earle in Greenwich Village. She wrote it in the bathroom because "it was the only place. the cockroaches would not go". It was originally performed by Fricker and her future husband Ian Tyson as the duo Ian & Sylvia, and they recorded it in 1963 for their 1964 album on the Vanguard label, Northern Journey. It was published in sheet form by M. Witmark & Sons of New York City in 1965

But in February 1968, when Ian & Sylvia were cutting Nashville, the sight, as Sylvia observed firsthand, was truly conspicuous. The Byrds’ Sweetheart of the Rodeo, released the same year as Nashville, is widely considered the first convergence of rock and Nashville players. Known for their straight-backed harmonies and for writing and recording the original versions of Someday Soon, Four Strong Winds and You Were on My Mind - all soon-to-be folk standards - Ian & Sylvia had already recorded seven albums by 1968, six for Vanguard and one for their new label, MGM. When Vanguard suddenly informed them they had one album left on their contract, the couple decided to fulfill their commitment with a change of musical pace and locale. In those days, record companies just threw money around, Ian says. If you wanted to cut an album somewhere, fine.

Ian & Sylvia, Canadian folk and country singers, sing 'You Were On My Mind' from their 1964 Vanguard album 'Northern Journey'. This song was written by Sylvia in 1962 (she says in her bathtub) and later recorded by the group 'We Five' - becoming Billboard's No. 4 song of 1965. This is the first of two recordings of the song by Ian & Sylvia. Thank you Gary Larson for sharing. As a teenager in high school I grew up listening to Ian & Sylvia.

As done by Ian & Sylvia on their third album (1964's Northern Journey), "You Were on My Mind" was a folk song, but one with strong hints of rock, pop, blues, and even gospel. Ian & Sylvia's original is excellent, yet quite different in arrangement from the We Five cover, as it features the pair's rich duo harmonies, a bluesier beat, strident acoustic guitars, and an autoharp.

You Were on My Mind is the first studio album by the folk band We Five which was released in 1965. The title track hit on the adult contemporary chart and on The Billboard Hot 100. The album landed on the Billboard 200, reaching The single also marked a musical transition because the single was one of the first to feature drums and the electric guitar on a folk composition.

Album Northern Journey. Ian and Sylvia - You Were on My Mind Songtext. Got up this morning, you were on my mind, and you were on my mind. I got some ache's and I got some pains and I got some wounds to bind. Went to the corner just to ease my pain, it was just to ease my pain. I got drunk and I got sick and I came home again. I got a feelin, down in my shoes. it's way down in my shoes. I got to move on. I got to travel. Got up this morning, you were on my mind, and you were on my mind
