Claypool and Lennon continue their prog rock direction in their second album, "South of Reality," with some minor changeups. With Claypool's bass riffs continuing to be a key asset throughout the album, the duo slim down on the ambient/noise guitar layers that were abundantly stacked in their previous album, as well as Lennon easing up on the heavy fuzz. Overall Impression - 8 As The Claypool Lennon Delirium continue to build their noteworthy brand of irreverent prog rock, the changes shown in "South of Reality" are relatively minor things that don't necessarily result in a one-upping of their previous album, nor a sophomore slump. Though the lessening of the psychedelic textures throughout the album may be an element that is missed, "South of Reality" fares well with its additions of different genre flavors to affix to the duo's prog rock backbone, giving it more variety.

Claypool and Lennon have a palpable friendship which culminates in an intricate, psychedelic fantasy landscape. At its most cohesive, there is an inescapable joy to the album, as the listeners stand witness to what can often feel like best buds cranking up King Crimson records in their basement and trying to play along with the rhythm . Musically, South of Reality benefits from the artistic background of its principal players, with Claypool carrying over his bass guitar prowess from his tenure with Primus and Lennon unable to outrun the legacy of his father’s Beatles sound.
