Pearl Jam's audience continued to grow during 1992, thanks to a series of radio and MTV hits, as well as successful appearances on the second Lollapalooza tour and the Singles soundtrack. Meanwhile, Temple of the Dog's self-titled album became a platinum-selling hit, thanks to renewed interest in the project (which, in addition to Pearl Jam, featured grunge heavyweight Chris Cornell) and strong radio support for the single "Hunger Strike. Stone Gossard also embarked on a side project called Brad, which released the album Shame in early 1993

Mudhoney is an American alternative rock band. Formed in Seattle, Washington in 1988 following the demise of Green River, Mudhoney's members are singer and rhythm guitarist Mark Arm, lead guitarist Steve Turner, bassist Guy Maddison and drummer Dan Peters. Original bassist Matt Lukin left the band in 1999. Mudhoney's early releases on the Sub Pop label, particularly their debut single "Touch Me I'm Sick" and the Superfuzz Bigmuff EP, were massively influential on the Seattle music scene.

Pearl Jam kicked off their 20th anniversary tour last week with a bang. Chris Cornell joined the Seattle rock band and reunited, for the PJ20 festival at least, Temple of The Dog. This Wednesday, the band began their Canadian tour by making their first stop in Montreal. This answer was clear the moment Mudhoney, the opening act, came on stage. They were loud, they were hard-hitting but unfortunately, they were also a mess, an ear sore and they failed to capture the attention of those in attendance. The volume was way too high for every instrument which muffled their sound. As much as I wanted to appreciate the fact that one of the fathers of grunge was jamming in the same room I was in, I found myself wishing I had brought earplugs with me instead.

Mudhoney, grunge historians will undoubtedly note, was sprung from the same pre-grunge Seattle rock roots as Pearl Jam. Pre-PJ band Mother Love Bone featured members of Green River, the Seattle band that Mudhoney's Mark Arm fronted in the ‘80s. And that band's Dry as a Bone was Sub Pop's first proper, non-compilation album release. On Saturday, Mudhoney kicked off the evening's proceedings in Alpine Valley's spacious amphitheater, flooding the venue with its large, sludgy sound-a sound that Sub Pop once claimed would destroy the morals of a generation

However, Green River called it quits when Arm and Turner formed Mudhoney in ’87, leaving Ament and Gossard to form Mother Love Bone with flamboyant vocalist Andrew Wood. Having inked a deal with PolyGram, Mother Love Bone promised great things, but Wood tragically died prematurely from a drug overdose and the band folded before their lone, critically acclaims album, Apple, was released in 1990. Devastated by Wood’s loss, Gossard began jamming with fellow Seattle guitarist Mike McCready, who encouraged Ament back into the fold.
