XO is the fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith. It was recorded from 1997 to 1998 and released on August 25, 1998 by record label DreamWorks; Smith's first solo album on a major record label. Two singles, "Waltz (XO)" and "Baby Britain", were released. Early sessions for the album began at Larry Crane's Jackpot Recording Studio after the release of Either/Or in 1997.

Steven Paul "Elliott" Smith (August 6, 1969 – October 21, 2003) was an American songwriter and musician. Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised primarily in Texas, and resided for a significant portion of his life in Portland, Oregon, where he first gained popularity. His primary instrument was the guitar, but he was also proficient at piano, clarinet, bass, drums and harmonica.

These albums featured a richer variety of instrumental arrangements and fancier production than his earlier, ric recordings. In 2003, Smith died in what is generally understood to have been a suicide. This came after years of struggle with depression, drugs, and personal demons, all of which he frequently addressed in his lyrics. From a Basement on the Hill, the album he was working on at the time of his death, was released by ANTI- in 2004.
