Composer: Erik Satie Artists: Håkon Austbö (piano). The unconventional French composer Erik Satie almost wrote anti-music. In slow motion (and without bars) his well-known Gymnopédies glide past. In other pieces one can hear more than faint echoes form the vaudeville theatre. Played by Håkon Austbø. On ‘7 Tableaux Phoniques’, British improvisers usually associated with French label Nato offers a refreshing take on Erik Satie‘s music, free from the cliches usually associated with it. Their multi-faceted approach is indeed more exciting than truckloads of mellow piano music currently flooding the Satie market. The Tableaux Phoniques (Phonic Canvases) of the title allude to Satie’s 3rd Furniture Music composition, titled Phonic Tiles (Carrelage Phonique). Alan Hacker contributes a succession of 3 tracks, each focusing on one aspect of Satie

He then composed several pieces througout the years, for a small ensemble of various instruments. Here is the "Carrelage Phonique" from the first set of pieces

On inner gatefold: "The Game: Seven english (do we really have to ask why) composers particularly interested in Satie's music were given the job to sketch one or another of these portraits in a six minutes time limit. Thank God no one really took this order seriously. The composers/musicians annotated sometimes their piece with a few lines. The music speaks for itself."
