The album was produced by Michael Baskette, who also produced the previous record World on Fire. After reuniting with Guns N' Roses in 2016, the possibility of a third record for Slash and Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators was in question, let alone if they would stay together.

Lyrics to "The Dream Is Dead" song by Type O Negative: Champagne glass of blood and wine On chocolate hearts alone I dine Candles weeping waxing tears Te. .Arrows fester in my heart Each memory another dart Love and death both colored red Showing my past, the dream is dead. Another lonely Valentine's Day I can't believe that things turned out this way And though I hate to see you go I know it must be so Another lonely Valentine's Day. Nobody will break your fall All for none, yeah, none for all Nothing's so cruel as the truth Join the Festival of Fools. Nobody will break your fall All for one, yeah, none for all Nothing's so cruel as the truth Join the festival, my fools

On Fire sounds like the Velvet Underground slowly warming up: In lieu of a Pop Art banana, Wareham sings about waiting in a line eating Twinkies; instead of heroin, he has a song about dropping acid in the woods; instead of Warhol, Galaxie 500 pair with an eccentric, no-frills producer named Kramer.
