Southern Accents is the sixth studio album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, released on March 26, 1985, through MCA Records. The album's lead single, "Don't Come Around Here No More", co-written by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, peaked at on the Billboard Hot 100. Its music video featured Alice in Wonderland imagery. The song "Southern Accents" was later covered by Johnny Cash for his Unchained album in 1996.

Southern Accents, the band's sixth LP, arrived in record stores on March 1, 1985 - and while all those years of dogged creative pursuit were audibly reflected in nine of the most intricately produced songs Petty had released to date, the album was actually a heavily truncated version of the project as he'd initially imagined it, and it was only completed after. months of painful and occasionally chaotic effort. Plenty of the songs Petty and the Heartbreakers worked on during the Southern Accents sessions were cast by the wayside after tortuous rescue attempts, but they didn't all require hard work. The title track, which Petty himself still regards as one of the better songs in his catalog, came out quickly during a late-night writing session. I started with the title," Petty told Performing Songwriter. I thought at the time I was going to do an album based on southern themes and southern music.

Produced by Dave Stewart, Southern Accents is an ambitious album, attempting to incorporate touches of psychedelia, soul, and country into a loose concept about the modern South. Occasionally, the songs work; "Rebels" and "Spike" are fine rockers, and "Don't Come Around Here No More" and "Make It Better (Forget About Me)" expand the Heartbreakers' sound nicely. But too often, the record is weighed down by its own ambitions.

Darrell from Thomasville, GaI bought the "33" Southern Accents album when I was stationed in Panama. The title track took me back home. A mention inside the jacket, if I remember right, said: "There is nothing as sad nor more glorious than generations changing hands. Southern Rock as a whole was down and Petty came out with this great southern rock album during a time when Springsteen, Madona (sp), Jackson, Prince, and U2 were in another world. It really cemented the greatness of Petty. To switch Genres with such a powerful recording. Honey don't walk out on me/to drunk to follow. You know you won't feel this/way tomorrow.
