Hið íslenzka fornritafélag, or The Old Icelandic Text Society is a text publication society. It is the standard publisher of Old Icelandic texts (such as the Sagas of Icelanders, kings' sagas and bishops' sagas) with thorough introductions and comprehensive notes. The Society was founded in 1928 by Jón Ásbjörnsson and launched its text series of medieval Icelandic literature known as Íslenzk fornrit in 1933.

Icelandic music has a very long tradition. With some songs still sung today dating from 14th century. Folk songs are often about love, sailors, masculinity, hard winters, as well as elves, trolls and other mythological creatures, and tend to be quite secular and often humorous. Bjarni Þorsteinsson collected Icelandic folk music between 1906 and 1909, and many of the songs he encountered were accompanied by traditional instruments like the langspil and fiðla, which are among the few musical instruments traditionally played in Iceland. According to the Icelandic label Record Records, the indie pop-folk group Of Monsters and Men is Iceland’s biggest act since Björk and Sigur Rós. Their debut album My Head Is an Animal, as well as their first single Little Talks, reached high positions in single and album charts worldwide.

The second recording by Old and New Dreams was, like its first from three years earlier, named after the group. Trumpeter Don Cherry, tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Ed Blackwell made for a mighty team, performing high-quality free bop in the tradition of the Ornette Coleman Quartet (of which they were all alumni). feat: Ed Blackwell, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Dewey Redman.

Icelandic Christmas (Gleðileg Jól!). It was, indeed, a Christmas store. 11 September 2011 ·. Skrámur skrifar jólasveininum. An Icelandic Christmas song.

The Lincoln pickup truck with Iowa plates was hurtling down Interstate 94, headed for Detroit. officers in unmarked cars were scattered along a 70-mile stretch, from Kalamazoo to Jackson, Mich. From on-ramps and overpasses, they watched traffic flash by as they tried to spot the truck. They believed it was carrying a major shipment of cocaine.

All new terms are coined and customized on the basis of Icelandic derivatives. Those early Icelanders, officially converted, spoke Norse, or Old Icelandic, and most of them must have been fluent in Gaelic as well.

Notes

Viktoría Spans, messó-sópran, syngur gömul íslenzk þjóðlög á A hlið þessarar plötu en á B hlið plötunnar syngur hún ný íslensk lög eftir höfunda úr röðum yngri tónskálda þjóðarinnar. Nokkur laganna voru meira að segja samin fyrir hana með þessa hljómplötu í huga. Titill plötunnar ber því nafn með rentu: Íslenzk lög - gömul og ný.
Viktoría Spans fæddist í Reykjavík, en kornung fluttist hún með íslenzkri móður sinni og hollenzkum föður til Hollands, þar sem hún ólst upp og gekk í skóla. Síðar tók við tónlistarnám, sem hún lauk á fimm árum. Þar á eftir komu einkatímar hjá Carlo Bino, sem þjálfaði rödd hennar samkvæmt hinum svonefnda "gamla-ítalska" belcanto stíl, sem Bino hafði einmitt lært hjá Tito Schipa. Að loknu tónlistarnámi og einkatímum hóf Viktoría Spans að starfa sem söngkona. Hún hefur komið fram á hljómleikum með kórum og hljómsveitum og haldið einleikshljómleika í heimalandi sinu, Hollandi, auk margra annarra landa, auk þess sem hún hefur mikið gert af þvi að syngja í útvarpi og það sérstaklega í sjónvarpi víða um lönd. Hún hefur allsstaðar verið eftirsótt söngkona þar sem hún er jafnvel heima í að syngja lög hinna eldri tónskálda svo sem Bachs og Mozarts sem hinna yngri eins og Gerswhins. Hún hefur gert margar plötur fyrir CBS og EMI í Hollandi en þetta er fyrsta plata hennar þar sem hún syngur á íslenzku og um leið fyrsta plata hennar fyrir íslenzkt hljómplötufynrtæki, en platan verður jafnframt gefin út í Hollandi svo búast má við að hinn fallegi söngur Viktoríu Spans vekji athygli úti í hinum stóra heimi á íslenzkum lögum - gömlum og nýjum.

Viktoria Spans, mezzo-sopran, sings old Icelandic folk songs on the A side of this record. The songs on the B side are on the other hand all brand new, written by the younger lcelandic composers, and in fact, some of them especially written for Viktoria with this record in mind. So the title on this record is appropriate: Icelandic songs - old and new.
Viktona Spans was born in Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. Her Icelandic mother and a Dutch father took her to Holland at a very early age, where she had her schooling and later a conservatory education, the latter which she finished within five years. After that she took singing lessons with Carlo Bino who schooled her voice according to the old-ltalian belcanto method, which he himself had been taught by Tito Schipa, and to which some other well-known singers owe their reputation as well. After that Viktoria became a professional singer and is equally at home singing Bach or Mozart as well as Gershwin or opera and oratorio. In Holland as well as abroad she has performed on the stage and on television and radio. Viktona Spans has made several record for CBS and EMI in Holland, but this is her first record where she sings in Icelandic and also her first record for an Icelandic record company.
