Premiers Symptômes (English: First Symptoms) is the debut EP by French electronic music duo Air. It consists of early singles released between 1995 and 1997. Les professionnels" was later used for the basis of Air's 1998 single "All I Need". Les professionnels" – 4:32 ("The Professionals"). J'ai dormi sous l'eau" – 5:42 ("I Slept Under Water"). Le soleil est près de moi" – 4:52 ("The Sun Is Close to Me").

With the French band Air, the collectors may just be right for once. Premiers Symptomes, a five-track EP boosted up to seven tracks for its eventual American issue on Astralwerks, features some of the most gorgeous moments in the duo's discography - no small task considering the gems included on their full-length debut, 1998's Moon Safari. Almost completely instrumental (except for the surprisingly smooth robot croon on "Le Soleil est Pres de Moi"), Premiers Symptomes offers a half-dozen tracks of beautiful, deliciously downtempo synth-pop

Hard To Find Air Album Compilation of the first 3 air releases. Air's European-label five-song EP, Premiers Symptomes, may have been a collection of early singles, but when it first came out in 1997 it felt all of a piece. Deploying an array of vintage mid-century instruments (Fender Rhodes, Minimoog, Clavinet), as well as a tuba, Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel created a cloistered, lulling sound world that was entirely their own (although, think The Percy Faith Orchestra Covers Brian Eno's Music for Airports and you get the basic idea)

Premiers Symptomes, a collection of early singles by Air, is the travel brochure. Before Moon Safari, Nicolas Godin and Jean Benoit Dunckel (the members of Air), recorded a variety of singles in their home studio. They had no major label and they had no major following. This was a series of experiments in the world of mind-expanding music. Air take from their signature artistic pallette on this album. Their soundscapes of keyboards, bass, electric piano, synth-trombone, and more create a visual sensation through music. This is still definitely music that can take one to another level of existence. Casanova 70" is an imagined soundtrack to a French film of the same name, while "Gordini Mix - Brakes on Mix" is an all-out jam-session that even samples the Beatles - more upbeat than anything else by the duo.

Nicearad

Personally I rate this as their best work to date. This particular collection of tracks is a lot more "cool" and less "kitsch" than any other Air release. Dare I say it might have something to do with Dunckel having less of an influence on Air's output at the time these were recorded. He is not even credited for the first two tracks, essentially making them Godin solo works. Despite having been released separately previously, the first five tracks which made up the original Premiers Symptômes are quite cohesive and form an impressive little body of music. The last two seem a bit tacked on at times, as they are a lot more upbeat, but are far from being subpar. Having never owned the five track original these last two tracks are an equally essential part of this release to me. I would only recommend this specific Limited Edition release to collectors and almost regret getting it over the standard edition. The quality of the video is bad enough to make it nearly unwatchable and the cardboard sleeve, while nifty, damages easily. The tracks are excellent, probably among the best music I know and love, and I'd recommend them to anyone. This Limited Edition has no substantial extras to offer over the regular release though.
