From the almost tactile tension of the very opening with its prominent pizzicato bass line over which the violins weave a songful, yearning counterpoint, one realizes that this is going to be an extraordinary performance. Somehow this is the turning point Symphony since Bruckner undertakes unwaveringly his absolute brand. Many directors have seen in this work a true epic sense. And this seems to be in concordance respect the Fifth Symphony represented in so many composers as Schubert, Beethoven, Shostakovich, Prokoviev, Sibelius and Dvorak. We have to admit the Wagnerian bombastic in its formal design and breath, this glorious leads us to new and original musical landscapes.

The Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major (WAB 105) of Anton Bruckner was written in 1875–1876, with minor changes over the next two years. It came at a time of trouble and disillusion for the composer: a lawsuit, from which he was exonerated, and a reduction in salary.

Bruckner Symphony No 5. A great reading of Bruckner’s mighty Fifth in the hands of a fine interpreter, captured on the wing at the 1971 Proms. View record and artist details. Record and Artist Details. Symphony No. Anton Bruckner Composer. Jascha Horenstein Conductor. BBC Symphony Orchestra. Author: Richard Osborne. Jascha Horenstein was 30 when he made what is perhaps the finest of the early electrical Bruckner recordings, his 1928 Berlin Philharmonic recording of the Seventh Symphony (Koch, 7/91 – nla). Later, in the 1950s, his Vienna Pro Musica recordings of the Eighth and Ninth Symphonies were regarded, along with Rosbaud’s South-West German RSO Bruckner recordings, as models of logic, probity and musical good sense.
