Pianist Michael Jefry Stevens has to be one of most under-appreciated composers and players around. His discography as a leader, going back to 1995, is slight, and he can be most easily heard in cooperative groups such as Conference Call (nominally led by Gebhard Ullmann) and the Fonda/Stevens group. Stevens is an intellectually stimulating player with eclectic tastes, an extremely sharp mind and fast reflexes, able to lead and follow in many a varied musical situation. Duval, in his contribution to the liner notes, mentions that in his playing at the time he was trying to not only provide the music's harmonic foundation, but also to incorporate the tune's melody and its meaning within his lines.

Michael Jefry Stevens (born New York City, 13 March 1951), is an American jazz pianist. Mr. Stevens currently resides in Black Mountain, NC. Stevens has been active for over 40 years with many New York jazz ensembles. With bassist Joe Fonda he led the Fonda-Stevens Group and recorded several highly regarded post-bop albums. Birdtalk is a clear reference to the bop roots of most of the players.

Pianist/composer Michael Jefry Stevens is a musician at the forefront of both modern mainstream jazz and creative improvised musics. Born March 13, 1951, in New York City, he took early piano studies at five years of age, moved with his family to Florida at age eight, and after many years of practice, took up rock & roll as a teenager playing the Farfisa organ. Stevens was artist in residence on the keyboard faculty of the National Guitar Workshops in New Milford, CT, from 1990-2002; was on the faculty of Five Towns College from 1992-1995; was artist in residence at the Virginia Intermont College in 1999; and received a Margaret Lee Croft Fellowship in 2000. He has also served as a composition fellow at the Centrum Arts Colony in Port Townsend, WA, and was active at the Royal Music Academy in Denmark in 2002.
