Luna was formed in 1991 by Dean Wareham after the breakup of Galaxie 500, with Stanley Demeski of The Feelies and Justin Harwood of The Chills. Guitarist Sean Eden joined in 1994, Lee Wall replaced Demeski on drums in 1997, and Britta Phillips replaced Harwood on bass in 2000. Luna released their final album, Rendezvous, in 2005 after playing their final concert at the Bowery Ballroom in NY. .

Dean & Britta is a musical duo consisting of Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips, both former members of Luna. Wareham had formed Luna in 1991 after leaving his first band, Galaxie 500. Phillips joined Luna in 2000, replacing bassist Justin Harwood. Their first album started out as a Wareham solo project, but when he heard Phillips' demos, he asked her to join him. "L'Avventura" was produced by Tony Visconti and was released on Jetset Records in 2003 under the name "Britta Phillips & Dean Wareham.

Luna’s catalog had long been out of print, mostly because the labels that released them folded. But thanks to Brooklyn’s Captured Tracks, the first five LPs are getting long overdue reissues both individually and as a deluxe box set. Wareham says the idea wasn’t his, but that of long-time Luna fan, Captured Tracks owner Mike Sniper. It was Mike’s idea, he says. This really came from him. He also works as a film composer, notably on the Noah Baumbach film The Squid and the Whale. He released a self-titled album in 2014 and reformed Luna in 2015.
