The White Stripes made Elephant, their fourth album, in just two weeks last year, at a London studio outfitted with an eight-track tape machine and recording gear that predates the Beatles. But the Detroit duo walked out with a work of pulverizing perfection. Singer-guitarist Jack White and his ex-wife, drummer Meg - the undisputed king and queen of the new garage movement - finally romp and rattle like a fully armed band. It is a glorious thing to hear. It will be one of the best things you hear all year. There is, for starters, true bottom here, for the first time on a White Stripes record.

Despite the White Stripes' ambivalence, fame nevertheless seems to suit them: They just become more accomplished as the attention paid to them increases.

The White Stripes' two strengths lie in their understanding of the physics of "rock 'n' roll" and, on the opposite end of the spectrum, their ability to craft a beautiful little boy/girl ditty. As for the former, guitars kick in at the mathematically precise moment. Drums drop out of the atmosphere in their window of opportunity, only to knock you back like a returning pendulum. Similarly, the naïveté of Meg's playing deflates any Big Rock aspirations. The child-like imagery of candy and Howdy Doody shirts renders Howlin' Wolf-like braggadocio transparent.

Rare release and even more desirable if you have the small promo poster that came with some of these. Not all came with the promo poster. Save up and spend more to get the complete package.
Murn
Minus the promo version, is this the only pressing V2 ever did of this album?
SoSok
Kind of irritated with this one. I bought it the other day at my local record shop for a local record shop price. Labels are totally wrong for the first disc (side A is mislabeled side 3), several little scuffs and divots from manufacturing, rough edges, had to use an X-acto blade on the spindle hole for the second disc just to get it on the table. Kind of noisy throughout (washed before it was ever played, I'm going to see if my new platter resolves this), but overall sounds pretty good except for the harsh sibilance on "You've Got Her in Your Pocket," which others have mentioned in reviews. The Third Man website says all sales are final unless there is a "significant issue with playback" or whatever and that's assuming someone buys from them directly. I think I'm going to steer clear of Third Man releases unless I buy them off Amazon...at least then I can exchange.

Please do not delete merge this release with the UK issue. It is clearly different from the UK edition. It has been well documented online for years. Even though it does not have a 'Made In Australia' info tag, it is the pressing sold here in Australia in the mid 2000's.

I own a mispress of the vinyl album:the label side 3 is the label side A.That makes: AB / ADDoes anyone have this mispress?
Agagamand
Sounds awesome with the exception of You've Got Her In Your Pocket. Anyone else experience sibilance on this track?
Fast Lovebird

' No computers were used during the writing, recording, mixing or mastering of this record. This communication in the booklet of the fourth cd Elephant by The White Stripes the U.S. says a lot about the music and the vision of this unusual duo. Singer/guitarist Jack and drummer Meg White are in many ways the precursors to the series of garage rock bands (The Strokes, The Hives) that a new form of primitive rock. Their minimalist approach translates into an extremely rudimentary band sound and a simple but effective visual presentation, which is based on the clean lines and basic colors of the painter Mondrian. Elephant is the first album after the international break-through album White Blood Cells (2001). Also this time prove The White Stripes of their generation enjoyed the most part of the long American musical tradition of countryblues, folk, rock 'n' roll and even Brill Buildingpop, what the cover I Just Don't Know What To Do by Burt Bacharach. These styles of for the computer age with the furious energy of the punk rock again brought to life, what the success of The White Stripes fully justifies.

This is what is analog sound about. Soft but same time dynamic and so colorful sound which is in these times quite unique, especially considering the fact, that this record was made during the times of CD hegemony. In my opinion an must have for each vinyl fan!
Yannara
On the subject of his and Meg White’s 2003 album, White says:“Did you know the British sleeve of Elephant was made out of recycled elephant dung? We forgot to tell people about that at the time.”
FireWater
Oh that's why my sleeve has basically disintegrated. Makes sense. Shit quality

Thordira
I tried 3 copies of the US pressing, all had bad sibilance on the inner track on side A. This UK press sounds great!!!
SlingFire
Excuse my English, I have a copy with a central label error on the side 3 is the label side A but good burning to disc. And you ?
GYBYXOH
I have some different runout etchings on my version. Wondering there is anyone else seeing the same thingA - UNEQUIVOCABLYB - HAND PEDAL COMPRESSIONC -BISCUIT EQUALS COOKIED - DONT HAVE THE PATIENCE TO WATCH BATTLE EVERY MINISCULE DISEASE
Anayanis
I have the same same runout etchings also. My copy was bought new in a store in Europe, but it seems to be imported, says "Manufactured by United Record Pressing in Nashville, TN" on the back. Could someone already compare the different versions sound-wise? I'm a little dissapointed with the sound of my copy, especially when comparing it to Icky Thump :-D
Nuliax
It seems that I have the same one as well.
Zepavitta
Yeah, my copy has the same etchings. Bought in US
Wooden Purple Romeo

Risa
Fantastic album and piece of vinyl. Great quality sound, not sure how good the other ones are. I bought mine at a little bit above the CD price years ago, can't believe it's worth over $50 now... Pick it up if ya can- just not from me!
Hrguig
Love this album, it sounds great but I've noticed some really harsh sibilance on the track "You've Got Her In Your Pocket." Anyone else facing this same issue?
Yozshubei
Really like the blue acoustic version anyway.Thats my personal opinion.
Iriar
After reading these messages i pulled the 2 copies i have , this 180g and the red / black split from uK, and yes there is sibilance on you've got her in your pocket on the 180, but the rest of the lp is dead silent, not so for the red/black copy, there is hiss and pops all through it, the sibilance is not evident on my red/black copy, but just turn down the treble on the 180 and it improves, that being said if you are an aficionado like me then the 180 is all good.
