Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard is the third solo album by Robert Wyatt. consisted of Wyatt's adaptations and arrangements of other people's music (either friends – Phil Manzanera, Fred Frith, Mongezi Feza, former Wilde Flowers bandmate Brian Hopper – or influences – Charlie Haden) with Wyatt adding his own lyrics in much the same way as he had done on Matching Mole's Little Red Record.

Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard ‎(CD, Album). Robert Wyatt's previous album to this is rightly held up as one of the best albums ever made. I was too young to know this music when it was first realeased and only came to Robert Wyatt much later in life. In retrospect it is this album and not Rock Bottom which points the way to his future music. Lots of songs, lots of collaboration and an introduction to what would be called world music. Robert Wyatt (born Robert Wyatt-Ellidge, 28 January 1945) is an English musician. A founding member of the influential Canterbury scene bands Soft Machine and Matching Mole, he was initially a kit drummer and singer before becoming paraplegic following an accidental fall from a window in 1973, which led him to abandon band work and begin a forty-year solo career. Wyatt's next solo album, Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard (1975), produced by Wyatt apart from one track produced by Mason, was more jazz-led, with free jazz influences.

That kind of abdication of the spotlight carried over to Rock Bottom's 1975 sequel, Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard, almost entirely music composed by other people (with occasional lyrics by Wyatt)- it includes pieces by expatriate South African trumpeter Mongezi Feza ("Sonia", on which Feza himself plays), Charlie Haden, and Jacques Offenbach

Robert Wyatt's voice is as distinctive and subtle an instrument as Tom Waits's or Bessie Smith's. He stretches his vocal chords through alien alto registers with grace, into notes few male singers are comfortable with past puberty. It's not stretching things to compare his work on Ruth to that of the greatest jazz-influenced singers. Wyatt knows how to throw a band together, too, choosing musicians who'll do their respective things complementarily, subtly. What amazes about Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard is not the command of styles, but how Wyatt sculpts all these together in an album that is deeply intimate for all those fortunate enough, and ballsy enough, to listen. This is not the shining silver arches of 1970s art rock, jazz fusion, adult rock, but a genius letting you into his one room cottage industry-where he crates music that no one else can.
