Rock Bottom is the second solo album by former Soft Machine drummer Robert Wyatt. It was released on 26 July 1974 by Virgin Records. The album was produced by Pink Floyd's drummer Nick Mason, and was recorded following a 1973 accident which left Wyatt a paraplegic. He enlisted musicians including Ivor Cutler, Hugh Hopper, Richard Sinclair, Laurie Allan, Mike Oldfield and Fred Frith in the recording.

1974's Rock Bottom wasn't Wyatt's first solo album- that was 1970's long-out-of-print The End of an Ear- but it was the first record of the second act of his career: In 1973, the wildly energetic former drummer of Soft Machine (and leader of Matching Mole) broke his spine in an accident. That kind of abdication of the spotlight carried over to Rock Bottom's 1975 sequel, Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard, almost entirely music composed by other people (with occasional lyrics by Wyatt)- it includes pieces by expatriate South African trumpeter Mongezi Feza ("Sonia", on which Feza himself plays), Charlie Haden, and Jacques Offenbach.

Robert Wyatt chronology. Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard (1975). The Animals Film (1982). The album contains several pieces which recall the complexity and despair of Rock Bottom, but much of the record echoes the relaxed, almost silly feel of earlier Wyatt efforts such as The End of an Ear or his work with Matching Mole. This becomes evident from the choice of title (a pun on "truth is stranger than fiction") onwards; the two sides of the original LP release were not labelled "Side A" and "Side B", but rather "Side Ruth" and "Side Richard" respectively.

Rock Bottom it ain't, but Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard is an excellent album and is prized because it's one of only 3 full-length Wyatt albums from the 70's. Although it lacks the gravity, cohesion and transcendent songwriting of the aforementioned Rock Bottom, this album has some really great moments and is a wonderful, worthwhile portrait of Wyatt's abilities. At its heart, Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard is an active listening album. What I mean is, if you don't pay attention when you listen to it, you probably won't enjoy it very much.
