Live at Leeds is the first live album by the English rock band The Who. It was recorded at the University Refectory, University of Leeds on 14 February 1970, and is the only live album that was released while the group were still actively recording and performing with their best known line-up of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon.

The inspiration for Live at Leeds II is Andy Kershaw, who was entertainments officer at the university for two years in the early 1980s before pursuing his BBC career. Kershaw found himself in conversation on the refectory stage with the university's vice-chancellor, Professor Michael Arthur, last year, after receiving an honorary doctorate in music. A live album had remained beyond them, though. The group balked at the idea of wading through recordings from their American tour to produce one, so decided to make one at a British concert.
We shouldn’t fool ourselves: a good part of the appeal of Tommy was its claim to profundity, a claim that was hardly lost on the hundreds of thousands who bought it (and who bought Led Zeppelin to satisfy other sorts of needs), and a claim which had no need of legitimizing verbiage from attendant writers to help it along
It was on February 14 1970 that The Who recorded their landmark Live At Leeds album in the hallowed 2,000 capacity Refectory. Thirty-six years later, with a little encouragement from me (a former Leeds Uni Ents Secretary), they were back to do it all over again.
The Who is ranked number 15 in the overall artist rankings with a total rank score of 116,138. Members who like this artist also like: The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.
