Released in 1983, Guardian of the Light also had the added baggage of a hard-to-follow concept of a fictional character's mystical exploits. This being George Duke, although the idea is odd, he was sure to get some good songs done here. It doesn't come easily however. Despite the good intentions, "Light," "Shane," and "Reach Out" differ little from the melodically challenged songs that typified his post-Brazilian Love Affair efforts. That being said, Guardian of the Light does include a classic

Coming to the close of his tenure with Epic records, Duke's great work seemed to be overshadowed by bunk. At the same time, he was becoming an in-demand producer with assignments from Jeffrey Osborne, Phillip Bailey, and Deniece Williams filling his schedule. Guardian of the Light reflects that strain
Guardian Of The Light' is Duke's finest album of the 1980's bar none. It begins with the orchestrated theme "Overture" with a high ended beat. The monsters "Light" with it's Clarke/Duke Project sound,"Fly Away" and the folkish "Soon" have a certain art jazz/rock edge that nobody has heard out of Duke in some time. Two catchy R&B songs "Born To Love You","You Are The Light" and the jazz pop of "Give Love A Chance" are three of Duke's best ballads . Because George Duke does it much more effectively with just music! Listen and you'll see the light. The grand big finale for me, and the one that completely blow away the other songs, is "Fly Away". Fantastic to say the least.
Guardian of the Light is a jazz related pop/art song/folk music album recording by GEORGE DUKE released in 1983 on CD, LP/Vinyl and/or cassette.
