Bluegrass at Carnegie Hall first appeared on records shelves in 1962. In spite of the title, the album is comprised entirely of studio recordings. Their September 1961 recording at Carnegie Hall was the impetus for Starday Records to release this album, They had a non exclusive contract with Starday, who released 9 singles, but refused to release and entire album, so they turned to Folkways.

The Country Gentlemen were a bluegrass band that originated during the 1950s in the area of Washington, . United States, and recorded and toured with various members until the death in 2004 of Charlie Waller, one of the group's founders who in its later years served as the group's leader. The classic line-up from 1960–64 consisted of co-founders Charlie Waller on guitar and John Duffey on mandolin, with Eddie Adcock on banjo and Tom Gray on bass.

Instead, it is a collection of excellent studio recordings made around the same time as their 1961 appearance at Carnegie Hall, that rank among their finest early recordings.
