A Monastic Trio ‎(LP, Album). The extant repetoire For Concert Harp seems inadequate in comparison to Coltrane's hungry reach and thirst-quenching arpeggiations that burst, float, arc and fade like a rainbow of fruit flavors for the ear and mind. An exquisite testament of naked beauty at once detailed and streamlined, exhibiting naturally supernatural performances that seem unstudied yet proficient, in a ratio perfect for seducing a mind ready for the transcendent.

Alice Coltrane's 1968 solo debut on Impulse still stands tall in the artist's excellent discography. Coltrane had already gained a considerable education playing in the band of her late husband John during one of his boldest and most exploratory periods. A Monastic Trio also benefits from a superb personnel list, including Rashied Ali on drums, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and the irrepressible Pharoah Sanders on saxophone, flute, and bass clarinet. This recording remains one of the landmark debuts in avant-garde jazz.

A Monastic Trio" is Alice Coltrane's debut album as a leader, recorded in two sessions in 1968 in the year following John Coltrane's death, and it finds her continuing the work of her husband. Coltrane is heard on piano and harp on the record, and is joined by Pharoah Sanders on reeds on three cuts, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and either Ben Riley (the three pieces with Sanders) or Rashied Ali (the rest) on drums. The next 3 songs are with the same trio, but Alice plays harp on them instead of piano. I love Alice's harp playing on Ptah The El Daoud and especially Journey In Satchidananda, but there is something different about it here. It is freer and looser.

This is Alice Coltrane's first album as a leader, made a year after her husband, John Coltrane, died. well, you get the point. Some people don't like this album because the musicians seem to be in "mourning" for Trane. I don't see this as a bad thing  . The musicians on A Monastic Trio (except for Ben Riley) made up John Coltrane's last group; they helped him make some of the most amazing music of his career, and of theirs as well. But they also made some great music after his death as well. A Monastic Trio documents the genesis of that great music.

A Monastic Trio is the first solo album by Alice Coltrane. Recorded in 1968 (the reissue includes one track from 1967), she intended it to be a tribute to her husband, John Coltrane, who had died the year before.

Her first album, A Monastic Trio, was recorded in 1967. From 1968 to 1977, she released thirteen full-length records. As the years passed, her musical direction moved further from standard jazz into the more cosmic, spiritual world. Alice Coltrane died of respiratory failure at West Hills Hospital and Medical Center in suburban Los Angeles in 2007, aged 69. She is buried alongside John Coltrane in Pinelawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale, Suffolk County, New York. Paul Weller dedicated his song "Song For Alice (Dedicated to the Beautiful Legacy of Mrs. Coltrane)", from his 2008 album 22 Dreams, to Coltrane; the track entitled "Alice" on Sunn O)))'s 2009 album Monoliths & Dimensions was similarly inspired.

one of the best recording debuts ever. The extant repetoire For Concert Harp seems inadequate in comparison to Coltrane's hungry reach and thirst-quenching arpeggiations that burst, float, arc and fade like a rainbow of fruit flavors for the ear and mind.An exquisite testament of naked beauty at once detailed and streamlined, exhibiting naturally supernatural performances that seem unstudied yet proficient, in a ratio perfect for seducing a mind ready for the transcendent. Coltrane's piano playing is further enriching in comparison to the commonalities and discrepancies it shares with her Concert Harp, exemplifiying a signature approach to the naturals and accidentals, she accepts risk without accident, and, proving herself to be the consummate auteur, makes the two instruments appear to be flip sides of a single colorful pallette: despite the difference between the horizontal (pianoforte) and the vertical (Concert Harp) playing surfaces, the reach of their registers is nearly the same (Concert Harp is ony a half-octave shy of the piano's range) as she ably ventures above and below the norm in caressing cascades of sound.A dissociative, unselfish pleasure that speaks to -or from- the divine, bless you Alice Coltrane.
