That's the Way I Feel Now: A Tribute to Thelonious Monk. Interpretation by Joe Jackson.

2. Little Rootie Tootie.

The way that Monk can take a well-known standard and make it instantly recognizable as his own is not something many others have ever been able to do. The quartet on this album is in top form. John Ore and Frankie Dunlop swing with such momentum that Monk and Charlie Rouse are able to rip some of the freshest solos on record. Big Band and Quartet in Concert. AM: Somewhat similar to the Orchestra record we pointed out, there’s just something special about hearing Monk’s work brought to life through a bigger sound.

It's just that so many Monk covers, supposedly inspired in some way by the eccentric genius himself, wind up sounding lame. Only 17 left in stock (more on the way). One thing I feel about the Columbia era is that it focuses Monk on the interaction between band members and of really polishing his work as opposed to introducing new songs. Orrin Keepnews, owner and producer at Riverside, his former label, always kept Monk trying new things, and he rarely had a band until the end of the fifties that played for more than a few months
