The Anthology of American Folk Music is a six-album compilation released in 1952 by Folkways Records (catalogue FP 251, FP 252, and FP 253), comprising eighty-four American folk, blues and country music recordings that were originally issued from 1927 to 1932. Experimental film maker Harry Smith compiled the music from his personal collection of 78 rpm records. Originally released in 1952 as a quasi-legal set of three double LPs and reissued several times since (with varying cover art), Anthology of American Folk Music could well be the most influential document of the '50s folk revival. Many of the recordings that appeared on it had languished in obscurity for 20 years, and it proved a revelation to a new group of folkies, from Pete Seeger to John Fahey to Bob Dylan.

When folk merged with rock to form the explosive new hybrid known as folk rock in the mid-1960s, Vanguard Records found itself literally in the vanguard of the new movement, probably at least as much by happenstance as design. The label was already enjoying more commercial success with folk music than any other indie, largely on the back of superstar Joan Baez, but also bolstered by such innovators and solid sellers as Buffy Sainte-Marie and Ian & Sylvia.

Both have been released to celebrate 50 years of Chris Blackwell's Island Records label (1959-2009) and having lived with "Ledge" a few days now, it's both brilliant and infuriating in equal measure (with the good far outweighing the bad it should be said). Take track 2 on Disc 2, "On The Road To Find Out" by Cat Stevens - it's a superlative lesser heard gem tucked away on Side 2 of his "Tea For The Tillerman" LP from 1970. Most fans will probably have the 2000 remaster of the album, but this version is a 2009 remaster and the sound quality is STUNNING - absolutely gorgeous. The instruments just leap out of the speakers with wonderful clarity.
