Fangoria Magazine – Roald Dahl’s Tales of the Unexpected by Bob Martin. Scan courtesy of Geoff Kessell. 10 Disc Set. Soundtrack Album Covers. Note: This album consists of many selections from composter Ron Grainer’s work, but the only track from Tales of the Unexpected is the theme! Grainer notes: The theme for the series is a cheekily innocent counterpoint to Roald’s wicked sense of humour. He also mentioned an intriguing bit of trivia
With Roald Dahl, Andrew Ray, Forbes Collins, Richard Johnson. Dramatizations of many Roald Dahl short stories. Like the short stories upon which they are based, the 'Tales of the Unexpected' focus on the consequences of duplicity, greed and other less-favourable traits so common throughout human kind. Little, if any, of the appeal is lost in translating these twisting tales from page to screen. The quality of the original material can be thanked for this but the talents of its legendary cast (Jose Ferrare, Joan Collins, Derek Jacobi, Brian Blessed, Cyril Cusack, etc, etc, etc) must also be acknowledged.
Every episode of Series 1, eight episodes of Series 2 and one episode of Series 3 were based on short stories by Roald Dahl collected in the books Tales of the Unexpected, Kiss Kiss and Someone Like You. The series was made by Anglia Television for ITV with interior scenes recorded at their Norwich studios whilst location filming mainly occurred across East Anglia. The theme music for the series was written by composer Ron Grainer.
Tales of the Unexpected (TV series). Tales of the Unexpected (Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected) is a British television series which aired between 1979 and 1988. Each episode told a story, often with sinister and wryly comedic undertones, with an unexpected twist ending.
We celebrate Roald Dahl day with a look at some of the author's best film and television adaptations - plus the man himself with advice on how to spot a witch. In fact, Dahl was unhappy with the film for placing too much emphasis on Wonka (at least he didn’t live to see the Johnny Depp version) but when Gene Wilder sings the wonderful Pure Imagination it’s easy to believe it was written about Dahl himself. To those of a certain age, the eerie theme by Ron Grainer (who also composed the original Doctor Who tune) will be instantly recognisable.

Roald Dahls playfully macabre adult stories launched this legendary British television series, which continues with stories of the same creepy ilk. Mixing dark humor with horror and fantasy, the tales are tasty tidbits of the macabre, each building up to a startling final twist. A little bit Hitchcock, a little bit Twilight Zone, and wickedly entertaining. Episode casts feature top-drawer talent, including John Mills, Leslie Caron, Derek Jacobi, Susan Penhaligon, Shiela Gish, Phoebe Nicholls, Ian Holm, and Cherie Lunghi.
