This first album was soon followed by The Tumbler, which was moving towards jazz. By 1970 Martyn had developed a wholly original and idiosyncratic sound: acoustic guitar run through a fuzzbox, phase shifter and Echoplex. This sound was first apparent on Stormbringer! in 1970, which was written and performed by Martyn and his then-wife Beverley, who had previously recorded solo as Beverley Kutner. Her second album with Martyn was The Road to Ruin, also released in 1970 . The Church with One Bell (covers album) (March 1998). Glasgow Walker (May 2000). On the Cobbles (April 2004).
But Martyn’s charm is that he was never a purist and the result is a surprisingly cohesive blend, with the unhinged vocals providing a common thread as the musical backdrop varies from morbid to funky. But make no mistake, a glimpse of John Martyn’s music is a glimpse of the far side. Dominic Pedler Metro 21 March 1998.
Recorded at Ca Va Sound Studios, Glasgow.
The church with one bell. A soulful Scotsman who spent the early '70s working alongside British folkies such as Nick Drake and Richard Thompson, John Martyn has built a body of work that stands equal to those of his more celebrated peers. Evolving from a folksinger into a jazz-folk troubadour and consummate guitar craftsman, Martyn possesses one of the more beautiful singing voices of this half century. He's selected some fascinating songs here to cover in his inimitable style
