Smile (stylized as SMiLE) is an unfinished album by American rock band the Beach Boys that was projected to follow their 11th studio album, Pet Sounds (1966). After bandleader and principal songwriter Brian Wilson abandoned over fifty hours of music recorded over a ten-month period with outside lyricist Van Dyke Parks, the band substituted its release with Smiley Smile (1967), an album containing stripped-down remakes of some Smile material.

Smiley Smile was one of the most genial and unpretentious examples of psychedelic music to emerge in 1967, although at the time it was a difficult album for many fans to appreciate. A lot of it is comprised of what amounts to languid, almost impressionist sound paintings, some of them, such as "Wonderful" and "Wind Chimes," quite stunningly beautiful, and others, such as "Vegetables," beguiling in their innocent goofiness, while still others, like "With Me Tonight," combined those attributes.

Smiley Smile always bothered me as a fan. I knew it was the bastard son of SMiLE, and the muffled sound didn't help. The album was sold as Stereo in 1967. The problem, like Wild Honey is it wasn't real stereo. It was Duophonic sold as stereo. The album was a cobbled-together, last-minute replacement for the scrapped SM!LE album
