It was the group's first foray into soul music and was heavily influenced by the R&B of Motown and Stax Records (artists such as Stevie Wonder). Lead single and opening track, "Wild Honey", became a minor hit with only a short chart stay. Its follow-up "Darlin'" reached the US Top 20. The album itself reached number 24 in the US and number seven in the UK.
To fulfill contractual obligations, the Beach Boys recorded Smiley Smile in the first three quarters of 1967. The hype died, the album failed, Sgt Pepper came out, and Wilson began a quick descent into madness. But when comparing it to such an album as the one preceding it here, it barely deserves a paragraph. One or two of its tracks succeed, mostly when it's either a classic bittersweet Wilson melody ("I'd Love Just Once to See You") or a throwback to 50's dance-pop ("How She Boogalooed It"). And naturally, the production still sounded good as long as Brian was at least in the studio.
So instead the Beach Boys rushed out a collection of fragments and outtakes called Smiley Smile, and followed it up a few months later with an all-new group of originals called Wild Honey. As a teenager I spent a lot of hours poring over Smiley Smile listening for traces of lost mystery and genius. But listening now, forty years later, I'm amazed at how bad most of Smiley Smiley really is. "Heroes and Villains," "Vegetables," "Good Vibrations," "Little Pad," and "She's Going Bald," are all pretty good, but that's about it. Stuff. It is also interesting to read the history behind the Smile project and this album. 3 people found this helpful.

The Beach Boys - Wild Honey (Live - 1972). Wild Honey (Session Highlights Instrumental). So there's this can of wild honey and we're making some tea. So I said, I'll write the lyrics about this girl who was a wild little honey. And I wrote it from the perspective that that album was Brian's R&B-influenced album, in his mind. It may not sound like it to a Motown executive but that was where he was coming from on that record. In that particular instance I wrote it from the perspective of Stevie Wonder singing i.
Along with Smiley Smile alternate takes, disc two of Sunshine Tomorrow boasts the Beach Boys’ previously unreleased live album, Lei’d in Hawaii. In August 1967, the band recorded two concerts and rehearsals in Honolulu, but after deciding the tapes were unusable, re-recorded a live in-studio set at Wally Heider Recording in Hollywood. While those recordings were completed and mixed, a canned audience track was never added and the project was ultimately scrapped. However, those sessions would inspire the Beach Boys to begin working on Wild Honey.
I produced Smiley Smile, but Mike inspired me. He said ‘Brian, let’s make a really good, easy-going album’. We had an engineer convert my den into a studio.
