Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is a double album by the English–American blues rock band Derek and the Dominos. Released in November 1970, it is best known for its title track, "Layla", and is often regarded as Eric Clapton's greatest musical achievement. The other band members were Bobby Whitlock on keyboards and vocals, Jim Gordon on drums, Carl Radle on bass. Duane Allman played lead and slide guitar on 11 of the 14 songs.
Eric Clapton formed Derek and the Dominos in 1970, after all of the band members worked together on George Harrison’s first album after the Beatles split, All Things Must Pass. Layla was one of the tracks on their first and widely acclaimed album, Layla and Other Assorted Songs. The song is about the woman he loves: Beatles guitarist George Harrison’s wife, Pattie Boyd. Indeed, it’s one of the notorious ten songs written by three different singer-songwriters who were smitten with Pattie Boyd. Harrison & Boyd later divorced and she and Clapton were married in 1979.
Derek and the Dominos formed after Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon worked on George Harrison's first post-Beatles album, All Things Must Pass. They got together at Clapton's house in England and started writing songs and playing small clubs. Bobby Whitlock explained in his Songfacts interview: "We toured all over England. Andy Summers from The Police named his daughter Layla. Two years after Duane Allman died, Lynyrd Skynyrd released their debut album containing "Free Bird," a song they often dedicated to Allman in concert. Like "Layla," "Free Bird" is powered by a lengthy instrumental passage that evokes the bird flying free. The band broke up when they tried to record a second album.

All four members had previously played together in Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, during and after Clapton's brief tenure with Blind Faith
The arrival of Derek and the Dominos on the British and American music scene in early summer of 1970 and the autumnal release of their one and only studio album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is an epochal event in rock history. Whitlock stuck around the Bramletts to record their fourth album, To Bonnie from Delaney, while their live album, the hastily assembled On Tour With Eric Clapton, hits the American Top 30. Captured at Croydon’s Fairfields Hall this set found Whitlock sharing a stage with Dave Mason and George Harrison and forging a rhythmic bond with Radle and Gordon.
Layla" is a song by rock band Derek and the Dominos and the thirteenth track from their album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, released in December 1970. It is considered one of rock music's definitive love songs, featuring an unmistakable guitar figure, played by Eric Clapton and Duane Allman, and a piano coda that comprises the second half of the song. Its famously contrasting movements were composed separately by Clapton and Jim Gordon. Derek and the Dominos.
