Though former Drive-By Truckers member Jason Isbell's previous solo albums displayed promise with songwriting standouts, his new LP Southeastern is his most gripping and most personal album to date. In recent interviews with the New York Times Magazine and the Wall Street Journal, Jason Isbell has been admirably forthcoming about his alcoholism, admitting that he can’t remember much of the time he spent with the Drive-By Truckers, who decided to move on without him after several attempts at rehabilation.

June 17, 2013 10:40PM ET. Southeastern. I sobered up and I swore off that stuff, forever this time, sings Jason Isbell on Cover Me Up, a world-weary love song that shows the Alabama native isn’t averse to autobiography. Here, he mostly dials back the volume to plumb heavy emotions.

Southeastern Tracklist. The fourth solo record from the former Drive By Truckers singer and songwriter. Southeastern Q&A.
Isbell's album does this quite well; his songs touch upon themes of addiction and intimacy while never feeling stuck in the assumed sentiments of country music. A masterclass of American folk songwriting. Jason Isbell is certainly one of the best of his kind today, and Southeastern is pretty convincing evidence that one day we might see him as one of the all-time greats. It’s easy for artists to say their songs tell stories, but that’s exactly what each of these tracks does, and the stories are just so bittersweet and well-written, brought to life triumphantly with his gorgeous harmonies with Amanda Shires.
