The Antifolk Vol. 1 compilation is a document of just such a scene, the punky singer-songwriter crowd that gathers for Monday night "Antihoots" at Sidewalk Café in Alphabet City. It's a family of sorts - and while they might like to pretend otherwise, the big sister and brother of this rag-tag bunch are undeniably Kimya Dawson and Adam Green of the Moldy Peaches.

Antifolk, Vol. Call It What You Want This Is Antifolk San Francisco Blues Festival Vol. 1 Festival compilations are a bad bet-added to the usual live-album pitfalls (one-take recording, bum mixes, wasteful arrangement, wasted talk) is the statistical unlikelihood of a single weekend affording great shows by the slew. I put my time in on this one because it offered a whole side of Roy Brown, who when he died a few months ago was the most powerful original r&b performer working.
Anti-folk (sometimes antifolk or unfolk) is a music genre that arose in the 1980s in reaction to the insularity of the remnants of the 1960s folk music scene. The music tends to sound raw or experimental with the intention to shock and protest. It generally mocks perceived seriousness and pretension in the established mainstream music scene. Artists of the anti-folk genre seem to observe the "rules" of music, but then deliberately break them.
