Church Divinity School of the Pacific, the only Episcopal seminary on the West Coast, integrates scholarship, reflection and worship with the ministry of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In our classrooms, in our communities, and in our partnership with the ecumenical and interreligious Graduate Theological Union, we define and enrich our faith, and embrace the future. Episcopal Divinity School at Union (EDS). In an ever-changing world, Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) is a respected and progressive center for study and spiritual formation for lay and ordained leaders. In preparing its students as servants of Jesus Christ, as lay and ordained leaders of the church, the Seminary has placed theological education in the context of residential community marked by common life and worship. Even if the in-coming class of seminary freshmen in The Episcopal Church was divided by the number of seminaries that the church has and those students were then assigned in equal numbers to the church’s schools, that strategy could not possibly guarantee the future of theological education at each of those locations. And even though no institution of higher education can be sustained by tuition alone, none of our seminaries have the kind of endowment that would make the math work. That said, GTS is the church’s oldest seminary
The history of the church in America began with the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. As more settlers arrived in America, the church spread and was the established church in several colonies. It was limited in its work, however, because no bishop was sent to the colonies, and only bishops could ordain priests and confirm church members. When the American Revolution began in 1775, there were about 300 Church of England congregations in the 13 colonies. In the 19th century the church expanded westward through the work of the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society (organized in 1820). In 2008 the church became one of several mainline denominations to issue a formal apology for the fact that some pre-Civil War Episcopalians held slaves. The church also took several controversial steps. In 1988 it elected its first woman bishop, Barbara C. Harris.
This is one of those times. Please, before you hit the "close" button on this box, would you consider a donation to keep Hymnary. What a blessing! But it is expensive to serve all of these people - worship leaders, hymnologists, hymn lovers and more - people like you who love hymns. And we have limited sources of revenue. This fund drive is one critical source. So if you benefit from Hymnary

Both the lyrics and the music were written by John Henry Hopkins, Jr. circa 1857, then an ordained deacon in the Episcopal Church, who was instrumental in organizing an elaborate holiday pageant (which featured this song) for the students of the General Theological Seminary in New York City while serving as the seminary's music director. In 1872, Hopkins was ordained an Episcopal priest and later served as rector at Christ Episcopal Church, Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The song tells the story of the Magi (found in Matthew 2) traveling to visit to the Christ Child, guided only by the Star.
